When is Grandparent’s Day and why do we celebrate it?
National Grandparents Day is a holiday celebrated in both the United States and the United Kingdom. It has been in existence since 1978 and is celebrated in an assortment of places around the world. Some celebrate it as one holiday while others celebrate it as two holidays, both Grandmothers’ Day and Grandfathers’ Day.
Although, it’s not as renowned as Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, it’s a great celebration and one that is rapidly growing in popularity. Grandparents are very important people, they are there for us through thick and thin, which is why Grandparent’s Day should now be a firm fixture in the calendar.
In the US it is celebrated on the second Sunday in September, while in the United Kingdom it is celebrated on the first Sunday in October. The next UK Grandparent’s Day will be on Sunday 4 October 2020.
This date is the perfect opportunity to show your grandparents just how much you care for them, which is why many will buy them a gift or send them a card.
How we celebrate today

If you live further afield, some will plan a surprise trip home, cook their grandparent’s their favourite lunch or alternatively, send them a special gift. From bouquets of beautiful blooms to hampers overflowing with decadent delights, including artisan cheeses, fine wines and decadent chocolates, to plants (especially if your grandparent’s see themselves as green-fingered connoisseur), or helium balloons brandishing the words ‘Happy Grandparent’s Day!’ – there are plenty of potential options to pick from!
If you’re unable to make it home for the date, sending your grandparent’s a special gift is a great way to show your love and gratitude. There are a number of online sites that offer same day and next day delivery, including Sunday delivery.
Grandparent’s Day flowers
Sending Grandparent’s Day flowers on Sunday is a great way to express your gratitude to your Grandparents. When choosing blooms, think of their favourite colours, the style of their home and also, something that will suit both of their tastes. If they both have very different tastes, opt for a generic flower arrangement or display in muted tones.
