Fathers Day

The History of UK Father’s Day

Father’s Day, which falls on 21 June in the United Kingdom, is celebrated all over the world. Just as we celebrate our mothers with Mother’s Day, we also celebrate the main men in our lives with a similar celebration.

Where did it all begin?

The history of Father’s Day in the UK began not too long after Mother’s Day – both traditions first appeared in the early 20th century. However, the celebration of UK Father’s Day did not originate in the UK, but in the USA. It first came to light in 1910 in a town in Washington called Spokane. Today, it is still very much celebrated in the USA, as well as in the UK and many other countries across the globe.

When it was first introduced, many laughed it off. This was mainly down to the belief that men should be the providers. This celebration was therefore ridiculed and parodied. It was also said to be another excuse to simply add another “XYZ celebratory Day” to the calendar. Fortunately for dads all over the world, Father’s Day quickly rose in popularity and within 30 years, Father’s Day had been commercialized with cards, gifts, flowers, and all manner of other activities. Since then the celebrations have continued to evolve to become the Father’s Day that we know today.

More on the history of this date

Father’s Day is now over 100 years old, and it has transpired from a simple concept to a bona-fide celebration. It is a special day in our diaries that allows us to show appreciation for our fathers, and for wives and mothers to show appreciation to the man who is the father of their children.

Date of Father’s Day

Father’s Day in the UK is held on 21 June. Although the date on which Father’s Day is celebrated varies across the globe, the most prevalent day for the celebration is the third Sunday in June. The United Kingdom, the United States and Canada all celebrate Father’s Day on this date. This differs greatly for Mother’s Day, which in the United Kingdom is marked on a different day to the USA.

Traditional gifts to gift dad on Father’s Day

Whether you live near or far from you Father, sending him a gift or handing one over in person is a great way to show your appreciation on this special day. You may wish to send a card with a few special words written inside it, or alternatively, a bouquet of bold blooms, a bottle of his favourite wine, a hamper, a balloon brandishing the words ‘Happy Father’s Day’ or a box of delectable chocolates. Whatever you choose, it’s the thought behind the gift that counts.

If you live in a different town or even in a different country, it is now easier than ever to send something to the main man in your life on this special day. There is an abundance of gifts to choose from online, many of which are available for the same and next day delivery. If you can’t be there, at least you know your gift will make it on time! Always remember to check cut-off times when looking at delivery options, as you may have to order by a certain time to secure the same or next day flower delivery.

Send a bouquet

Flowers, contrary to belief, are not just for girls! In fact, men enjoy receiving a bouquet of blooms just as much as women! Simply choose a more masculine style, flowers offering a simple colour palette, or (if you know it), a bouquet brandishing your father’s favourite blooms. The likes of Serenata Flowers have a range of Father’s Day options to choose from, all of which are available for same and next day flower delivery. This means the blooms you pick will be delivered directly to the door of your dad in little to no time, just be sure to order before the cut off time if you want them to be delivered on the day!

Which blooms to choose

With so many different styles and colours to choose from, picking the perfect bunch can be a tricky decision. Thankfully, you’ll find an array of inspiration on online florist pages. Choose from peace lilies, white roses, yellow carnations, or hot hued blooms if you really want to make an impression – and if you can match the blooms to your father’s home décor, even better!

Other gift ideas

If you’d prefer to gift your dad something else or add something more to the bouquet, a hamper overflowing with delectable delights, including sweet and savoury treats, is a great idea. Alternatively, you may want to consider giving him a plant – don’t worry if he isn’t much of a green-fingered connoisseur either, as there are many species that can survive with limited care and attention!
