Get your Home Ready for Winter

As the nights draw in earlier and the temperature starts to quickly drop, it’s a sure sign that winter is well and truly upon us.

To make sure that your home is ready for the winter – here are some handy ways to keep your spirits high even when the temperature is low.

1. An annual check-up

Very few people like to get up in the morning to a cold house, so to make sure that your central heating is fit and ready to use; check that all the radiators are working properly and bleed them if necessary.

Booking a certified engineer to give your boiler a once over will ensure that it’s in tip-top condition for the coming winter and avoid any costly emergency call-out expenses.

2. Plant life

Just because it’s cold outside and your garden is looking a little barren, it doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy the scents and colors of beautiful plants.

At this time of year; scattering long-lasting pots of poinsettia, hyacinth, cyclamen or even amaryllis around the house will inject an instant burst of life into any room and help to keep the gloomy weather at bay.

3. Illumination

Sitting in front of a roaring open fire when it’s raining and windy outside is a lovely thing to do. However, for those who live in more contemporary built or smaller homes changing the way you light a room can make all the difference.

Fairy lights do not have to be reserved just for a Christmas tree, so use them instead to light up a bookcase or a door frame for a gorgeous warm glow. Turn off your central lights and replace them with strategically placed candles and tea lights for a cosy and welcoming atmosphere instead.

4. Emergency rations

We all know that weather reports don’t always get things right, so to avoid having to brave the worst of the weather stock up on essential long life foods now. Replenish your freezer with hearty staples and comfort food that you love for those days that you just simply can’t venture outside of your front door.

Make the most of being stuck indoors by a freak snowstorm with a festive hamper full of gourmet delights that will go down a treat in a warm and cozy winter-proof home.
