7 Tall Indoor Plants that will Transform Your Home

It’s easy to brighten up an interior space with an array of tall indoor plants, all of which promise to add life and an injection of colour to an otherwise minimalistic home or office environment. When considering what indoor plants to choose, pick something that suits your lifestyle.

For example, if you have a busy social and work schedule to contend with, pick a low maintenance plant, and an option that requires little care.

What to consider when choosing a tall indoor plant

When considering what plants to pick for a particular room’s design, there is plenty that you need to think about.

For example, consider the space available and the container the plant is going to sit in. In essence, a plant acts as a piece of furniture and therefore, should complement its environment and surroundings. You may wish to pick one participant plant, or alternatively, a grouping of plants.

If the latter, choose plants that thrive together and have similar needs, as this will make them easier to care for as a whole.

Finally, consider the location the plant will live in – this should be dictated by the plant’s light needs and also by an individual’s tastes…

Best Tall Indoor Plants

Meyer Lemon Tree (Citrus x meyeri)

This tree has been named due to the fruit it produces, which come in the shape of fragrant Meyer lemons. It’s said to be a hybrid of lemons and mandarin oranges, yet its yield is slightly sweeter with a subtler flavour. Asides from producing fruits, these trees boast an enjoyable fragrance in the shape of a citrus flower-like scent.

Meyer Lemon Tree Care: Providing they’re placed in a sunny spot, these plants will do extremely well indoors.

Kentia Palm (Howea forsteriana)

The fronds of this plant grow to great heights, springing from the soil, and shading the ground beneath. They look particularly impressive when placed in a great big urn. However, you’ll need to pick a spot with lots of space, as this species can grow to an astounding ten feet in height and has a broad reach.

Kentia Palm Care: They require medium to bright light and you must water them weekly. To ensure they get the correct care, simply set a diary reminder!

Fiddle-Leaf Fig Tree (Ficus lyrata)

This shrub offers a lengthy, elegant stem and boasts branches with wide, leathery leaves. When placing this plant in the home or the office, for best results pick an area under a skylight or next to a window. This species requires as much sun as possible. When it begins to get unruly or grows branches above the window frame, simply prune back the top section.

Fiddle-Leaf Fig Tree Care: Water once a week, sometimes a little more in the winter months or if the air in your home or office is particularly dry. With this in mind, choose where you place this plant wisely.

Split-Leaf Philodendron (Monstera deliciosa)

Said to be the celebrated artist Henri Matisse’s favourite plant, this species boasts a distinctive leaf that looks as though it’s been cut into by a delicate hand. If you’re longing for more than one of these tall indoor plants, simply cut off the top (provided the plant has air roots attached) and replant the cut section in order to cultivate another.

Native to the jungles of India, Mexico, and Panama, the leaves of the Split Lead Philodendron can grow up to three feet long and two feet wide. Note this plant is poisonous and is therefore not suitable for those with children or pets.

Split-Leaf Philodendron Care: This is an easy plant to look after and requires watering just once a week. You may wish to manage its size by aggressively trimming it on a regular basis.

Castiron Plant (Aspidistra elatior)

This plant offers mostly dense foliage, which makes it a great option for those looking to add a rich, lush, dark green injection of colour to an otherwise blank space. It thrives in medium to low light and is pretty tolerant of neglect, which makes it a great option for those with a busy lifestyle.

Castiron Plant Care: Water once weekly or every ten days.

Eucharist Lily (Eucharis amazonica)

Another rich, dark green plant complete with impressive white flowers that bloom throughout the winter and early spring. Even without the flowers, this species is still impressive to look at. It is able to thrive in medium light. For best results, allow the soil to dry between watering.

Eucharist Lily Care: When this plant requires water, the leaves will begin to wilt. Most will water it once a week. This does however depend on the environment it is placed into. Air conditioning and heating may affect its growth, which is why it’s wise to keep an eye on the health of the leaves.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)

If you have a contemporary interior space to dress in, this is an ideal tall indoor plant option. With its sword-like shaped leaves, it makes for a focal point in any room! The leaves wind gently up from the soil, and look a little like charmed snakes – hence the name ‘snake plant’.

Snake Plant Care: Care is minimal, making the snake plant a very low maintenance option – ideal for those who are busy yet who still wish to create a feature with plants in their home, adding instant ambiance to a number of different rooms in the household.

You can pretty much place this plant anywhere you like. It is however important to allow the soil to dry completely between watering.

Tall indoor plants are the perfect addition to a blank canvas and the best indoor variants promise to add just the right amount of colour and intrigue.

They’re both organic and sculptural, and if cared for correctly, create a decorative center point and one that keeps on giving, mainly because a plant’s life span is much longer than that of a bouquet of freshly cut flowers.
