After spending a fortune on Valentine’s Day and birthdays, it’s really not long before Mother’s Day comes along.
We’ve all felt like our money doesn’t go far enough – especially after Christmas and New Year – and having so many expensive periods at the start of the year can leave our bank accounts screaming for mercy.
Mother’s Day is a holiday we just can’t ignore. It’s the day when we celebrate the women who brought us into the world so woe betides anyone who doesn’t show their appreciation!
Spending less on it doesn’t mean that you love your mum any less though, and there are plenty of ways to bring the final cost down without scrimping on the sentiment – such as with flowers.
A beautiful bouquet is likely to be a central part of your Mother’s Day gifts and here are six simple ways to save money on it.
1. Get what’s in season
Choosing flowers that are currently in season will always cost you less than trying to source out-of-season bouquets that are in short supply.
Florists will be able to advise you on which flowers are in season with many online florists listing their options in a specific page of their website for added convenience. As Mother’s Day falls in spring you won’t be short of choice either!
Top tip: carnations are a traditional in-season Mother’s Day flower but they’re also one of the cheapest flowers around. Use them to fill out your bouquet and remember they come in a wide range of colours so you can pick a shade you know your mum will like.
2. Less really is more
Ever thought that a woman who wears too much make up doesn’t look as good as someone with a more natural approach?
It’s the same with flowers – less really can be more. Instead of a big bouquet, choose a few flowers you’ll know your mum will love and save the pennies. If she has a smaller home then a big bouquet might be impractical anyway.
Top tip: combine a few large flowers with smaller fillers to achieve a balanced bouquet and always opt for odd numbers when selecting your larger statement flowers as this always looks better.
3. Order online
Rather than getting caught in the hustle and bustle of busy shops, order your Mother’s Day flowers online and enjoy the opportunity to explore your options fully and compare prices.
Top tip: many online florists offer discounts on first orders and may deliver free of charge so look out for this.
4. Order in advance
The earlier you order your flowers the cheaper they will be – and the less you’ll have to worry about in the run up to the big day!
Even ordering your flowers a week or two in advance can cut costs dramatically but if it does slip your mind than many florists accept last-minute orders and will guarantee delivery on the big day if ordered by a set date and time.
Top tip: place and pay for your order online a few weeks in advance but choose a delivery date closer to the actual event to ensure your mum gets fresh flowers.
5. Discount codes and deals
Discount codes and deals will be everywhere in the run-up to Mother’s Day so keep your eyes peeled online and even in newspapers.
Some credit card companies even offer a range of discounts and promotions around holidays such as Mother’s Day so it’s worth checking for these too.
Top tip: look for introductory offers with online florists to save money on your first bouquet. Some even offer loyalty discounts so if you’ve ordered flowers from a particular company before then check to see if you could save again.
6. Deliver yourself
If you can deliver the flowers yourself then you may find that you save a little money.
Not all florists charge for delivery but some do and hand-delivering a special bouquet to your mum is sure to make the gift more meaningful.
Top tip: if your flower order comes with free delivery but you want to get the most from surprising your mum with flowers then have them delivered to your home and take them round yourself or be with your mum when she receives the delivery so you can see the look on her face first-hand.
Say it with flowers…
Telling your mum how much you love her will mean far more than spending a fortune on a bouquet of flowers so there is absolutely no need to stress about your financial situation this year.
Make the most of these tips and show your mum just how special she is … without breaking the bank!
