How to Send Christmas Plants by Post Safely

Christmas is the perfect excuse to buy an abundance of gifts for your loved ones.

One popular way to spread the festive cheer is to purchase a variety of Christmas plants.

From bouquets to garden goods and festive wreaths, there are a variety of options to choose from and all will add a splash of color to your friends’ and families’ homes this Christmas.

The best ways to package and send plants by post

One way to ensure Christmas plants arrive in tiptop condition is to buy them online from a florist, gifts company or online retailer specializing in shrubberies.

They are professionals when it comes to delivering delicate items to various addresses around the globe, and if anything does go wrong, they’ll make sure a replacement is sent out in an instant.

If you’re planning on spending a great deal on Christmas plants this festive season, letting someone else do the hard work for you is a great idea.

Do it yourself

If you decide to send plants yourself, you must make sure they are packaged correctly.

One good tip to follow is to ensure the plant has been removed from the ground the day before you intend to send it.

Before you package it up, keep the roots soaked in water overnight and don’t add any soil to the pot until you’re about to post it. When packaging the plant up, to protect the foliage, lay the plant diagonally on a sheet of newspaper and roll the paper around the entire shrub. The newspaper will act as a protective cone and will stop both the leaves and roots from becoming damaged.

When it comes to sending the item, request a priority mail box from the Post Office and pad it out with more newspaper, these boxes come with labels, which must be marked with the words ‘live plant’.

Finally, keep the package stored in a cool place until you mail it.

Do your research

When it comes to purchasing plants in the winter season, it’s important to do your homework.

Not every species will survive the cold months, which is why it’s imperative you choose the correct plant for the correct season. Bouquets are a great option as they are easily purchased online in a variety of winter styles and colors.

The florist will pick out flowers suited to the season, which means you’ll be left with the job of solely choosing which colors and displays you like the look of.

Send seeds

If you’re worried that a plant is an either too big of a gift or too much hassle to send, opt for a range of seeds and gardener’s goods instead.

From miniature trowels and watering cans to moisturizing hand creams and plant food, there are a number of green-fingered gifts to choose from. You may even wish to pop them all in a homemade hamper, complete with festive glitter and a bow.

Check postal cut off dates

When sending any gift this festive season, including Christmas plants, make sure you get it to the Post Office before the Christmas cut-off.

This season is the busiest of them all when it comes to postal services, which is why it’s imperative that you’re organized. Take a trip to your local Post Office and check what dates they deliver up until, this way you can ensure you’re loved ones receive their presents in time to open on Christmas day.

Opt for a courier service

If you’ve decided to send one particular friend, loved one or family member an abundance of Christmas flowers, it may be a good idea to get a courier.

This way you can ensure they’ll arrive in perfect condition. Certain companies will even help with the set up of these gifts, especially if they’re larger in size – an asset to those receiving them.

Deliver your gifts by hand

If you want to make sure your Christmas gifts arrive safely, deliver them yourself by hand (this only applies to those who live a short distance from friends and family).

Alternatively, invite everyone round to your home for Christmas and present them with the likes of poinsettias and Christmas cactuses on the day.
