What Plants Grow Best in the Kitchen?

Today’s kitchens are the heart of the home – they’re often designed exquisitely and can benefit from the addition of a variety of plants. Including kitchen plants in various shades of green can really enhance the colour palette of a plain cookery space.

In addition to this, the odors of cooking can be disguised by a fragrant plant, as they also help to purify the air. Fortunately, there is an abundance of blooms that can help to transform a kitchen, and best of all, many are incredibly easy to look after.

Below we’ve listed a variety of kitchen houseplants that will do well in an area where you probably spend a lot of your time!

Aloe Vera

This easy to care for the popular plant will thrive near a window area with good lighting. Try to water it once or twice a week, but even when forgotten about for a while, Aloe Vera will still thrive. This makes it a great option for those looking for a low maintenance kitchen plant.

English Ivy

This abundant and easily grown plant adds a pop of colour with its deep green leaves and long trailing vines. It’s adaptable to most areas but prefers filtered light. Ensure the soil the pot is dry on top before watering and do not soak the plant.

English Ivy is an incredibly quick growing plant, which makes it an ideal option for those looking to fill an empty space in their kitchen.

Chinese Evergreen

This is a great plant for the novice gardener as it is able to survive with little care. Root rot can occur relatively easily though, so be sparing when watering. When placed in an area in the kitchen where the light isn’t too bright, your Chinese evergreen should grow happily.

African Spear

This exotic plant, named for its spear-like leaves, prefers an area where the light is filtered. Often grown so the leaves can be braided, it makes a unique plant for the kitchen and is a great centerpiece. If there is a draughty area, this plant can withstand it and only needs to be watered every two weeks. Despite being so easy to care for, it gives a lot of pleasure as it is extremely impressive to look at.

White Jasmine

Definitely one for the kitchen area, the White Jasmine plant fills the room with a wonderful fragrance. As a plant that looks stunning in a hanging basket, its beautiful white flowers can brighten up the area where it is placed. It’s an easy plant to grow but must be placed where the light is good. In the summer, be sure to water it well, while in winter months, less light is needed.

Philodendron Silva

With its green heart-shaped leaves, this is a plant designed for center stage. Placed in a beautiful pot, it can grace any table or work surface. Although it is able to tolerate poor light conditions, it is always happier in a softer, moderate light. If you opt for this as a kitchen plant, make sure to water it lightly, keeping the top of the soil dry.

String of Pearls

This perennial succulent has small round leaves that resemble a string of pearls, which makes it very pretty to look at. It is a light-loving plant that has adapted to fluorescent lighting, which makes it perfect for a kitchen without a window. Otherwise, it will look well hanging over the kitchen sink or on a windowsill. To care for it, let the soil dry out then give it a good soaking.

Devils Ivy

Also known as the golden pathos, this drought-tolerant plant produces heart-shaped leaves. Even when kept in the kitchen, in what is naturally a humid environment, it would still be advisable to water it every two weeks, while letting the water drain right through the pot. Devil’s Ivy is another fast-growing vine that prefers a shady area.

ZZ Plant

With the botanical name zamoculcas zamiifloria, this plant can be placed in the kitchen where the lighting is not so bright. It’s a great plant to grow if you don’t have green fingers as it’s difficult to kill off. Water very sparingly for best results, although this plant can go months without water. You can easily leave this plant to thrive in a dull corner, should you wish to.

Peace Lily

The peace lily is an amazing plant with so many benefits! Firstly, it’s among the best air cleaning plants, helping to rid areas of toxins. It’s also very beautiful with its elegant white flowers, which makes it a delight to have in your kitchen.

Preferably, it should be placed in an area with softer lighting. Care for the peace lily is also straight forward, as it shows you when it is thirsty – the leaves will begin to droop! However, once watered, it perks up almost instantly.

Fiddle Leaf Fig

If you want a kitchen plant to really make a statement in your cooking space, this is a great plant to choose from. It is also an extremely sturdy plant and can grow to about six feet in height. Simply place it in a large pretty container and watch it thrive!

It does prefer good light but can survive in duller places. Water it well when soil becomes dry, letting the water drain out through pot, then avoid watering it again until the soil is dry to touch.

When adding plants to the kitchen, look at the places that need brightening up and carefully choose the plants that suit the space you have to work with. Choosing the correct shrubs and flowers will instantly bring the place to life. In fact, adding a pop of green to any space in your home is always a welcome sight.

Regardless of whether you’re a green-fingered composer or an amateur, there is a plant to suit all tastes and abilities. It’s often the kitchen that is overlooked as a place to grow plants, but with so many kitchen plants out there that are suitable, you can quickly change that!

Choosing kitchen plants is very easy and many of the plants offered today can be ordered online at an online florist. You don’t need to wait long for them to arrive either, as a number of florists offer same day and next day plant and flower delivery.
