Send Happiness on the International Day of Happiness

Asides from growing our economy, people all over the globe recognize that ‘progress’ should center on increasing human happiness and wellbeing – hence the International Day of Happiness was born. This global campaign, celebrated on 20 March, is supported by over 193 countries and embraces the importance of relationships, kindness and helping others.

History of the International Day of Happiness

In 2011, the UN General Assembly implemented a resolution that acknowledged happiness as a “fundamental human goal” and called for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples”.

A year later saw the first ever UN conference on Happiness, whereby the UN General Assembly approved a resolution that announced the International Day of Happiness would be an annual event. It was introduced for the first time in 2013.

Actions for happiness

Embracing feelings of wellbeing in our homes, offices, schools and local communities is exactly what the International Day of Happiness embodies. With a vision for a happier world, through good vibes, kindness and helping those in need, we can all take action. Of course, making those around you happy shouldn’t be limited to the one yearly date and is something that should be encompassed every day.

How you can make someone happy

There are a number of ways you can make someone happy, from smiling at a passer-by in the street, to wishing your neighbor a good day, to visiting a friend who lives in another city – gestures both small and big make a huge difference.

Send a special someone a gift

Sending a family member, a friend or a colleague a gift, such as a bouquet of beautiful blooms, is a great way to brighten up their day. Opening the door to flowers is a sure-fire way to make someone smile and it’s also a great way to show them that you are thinking of them. Online florists such as Serenata Flowers offer an assortment of floral arrangements, comprising various hues and designs, meaning there is something to suit all. You can also take advantage of same or next day delivery, depending on when you place your order.

Finally: Be happy!

Being happy yourself is contagious. When you smile, those around you smile, so embrace every day as it comes and always try to see the positives in life!
