Celebrating Friendship: the Milestones

With World Friendship Day looming on 30 July, now is a great time to consider all of the milestones that you and your partner in crime have overcome!

First proposed in 1958, the day recognizes the roles that friends play in our lives and gives us all the chance to say thanks, and think of the memories forged together.

Your first friend moment

Dating isn’t solely for the romantic, as friends can go on dates too. Whether you met at the gym, were introduced through mutual friends, met via an app, or on a night out, the first time spent with someone can be daunting, to say the least.

What if you have nothing in common? What if the conversation runs dry? What if you say something silly? These are worries we all have! Yet the best way to overcome these concerns is to stop overthinking them!

Your first time partying with one and other

The success of a first night out means a great deal in a friendship and is often the beginning of many fun-fuelled adventures. From learning more about each other’s tastes (be this food, drink, or music) to dancing like no one is watching and completely letting your guard down, a night out is often the test of a true friendship.

Your first breakup

We all go through it and we’ve all been there for a friend who has gone (or is going) through it. Being there for a special someone who is dealing with heartbreak is often a defining moment in a friendship. In fact, it helps you to distinguish the good from the bad.

When you’re comfortable enough to let go and cry in front of a friend, this is a sign they’re a true friend.

Lending a friend your favourite item of clothing

When you don’t mind lending someone your favourite dress, shoes, or jewelry, it’s likely you trust them with your belongings a great deal. This is another sign of a true friendship.

Your first time traveling together

Traveling with a friend for the first time can be a risky decision, but more often than not, it’s a positive experience, and one destined to lift your friendship to new heights. Even if your traveling styles didn’t align perfectly, it’s a great way to learn more about your bestie and the value of compromises.

Your first fight

Fighting is never fun, although it’s often inevitable when you spend a great deal of time together, and sometimes necessary provided that you learn how to forgive and forget. Knowing you’re able to disagree and move on is another sign of a great friendship, and is a good way to be honest with each other.

Your first meeting with the family

Friends are often an extension of our families, which is why they’ll likely spend as much time with your mum, dad, and siblings as you do. Understanding where your bestie came from, who raised them, and the relationships they have with their nearest and dearest is a sure-fire way to bring you both closer.

Your first birthday together

Planning a party with your bestie is so much better than planning a party alone. Whether it’s a joint affair or your friend throws you a surprise party, being able to share the celebrations with your sidekick makes the experience a great deal better! It also takes the stress out of the entire situation.

The best of friends do everything they can to make the birthday girl or boy feel special all day long!

Your first time hosting an event together

From a Christmas lunch to something more low-key, such as drinks with friends, hosting a joint soirée is something the best of friends will often do together. Being able to work in harmony alongside one and other, like the dynamic duo you are, is a great gift to have.

The first big personal struggle

Whether you’ve been fired, been involved in an accident, or encounter a family emergency, there are many times in your life when you’ll need to rely on your nearest and dearest for support. True friends won’t care what time you call them, how much assistance you need, or how demanding you are being, as they know you’ll always return the favour.

Your first big accomplishment

Whether you’ve published a book, landed your dream role, moved to a new country, or purchased your first home, who better to celebrate such a milestone with than your best friend! With growth comes change, however, one thing to never alter is the value of true friendship!

As you can see, there are many milestones throughout a friendship worth celebrating and remembering, so why not mark World Friendship Day with fresh blooms, or maybe even a houseplant? That way, you’ll have a reminder of the power of your friendship every time you look at it!
