10 Ways to Celebrate Siblings Day

We love to hate them but can’t imagine our lives without them – they know our strengths and weaknesses and are often our first best friend.

The bond between siblings is extremely special and what better way to celebrate the love we have for our brothers and sisters than on Siblings Day on April 10. With the likes of Solange and Beyonce Knowles along with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen all celebrating the day of all things siblings, there is no reason you shouldn’t either.

The bond between siblings is thought to be one of the most powerful and long lasting so let’s get celebrating!

The history of Siblings Day

Siblings Day is the brainchild of American born Claudia Evart. It is designed as a day of recognition and celebration of love and friendship between brothers and sisters around the world.

Claudia Evart is thought to have lost both her siblings extremely young in unfortunate accidents. She chose to celebrate National Siblings Day on April 10 – the anniversary of her late sister’s birthday.

Siblings Day follows the same spirit as that of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day; a celebration of family values.

With this in mind, here are 10 fantastic ways to celebrate Siblings Day and make your brothers and sisters feel extra special this year:

1. Give them a call

As we grow older, very few siblings live together or even see one another on a daily basis due to family and work commitments. So, why not take the time to give your brother or sister a phone call? Use it as the perfect opportunity to catch up on the latest gossip and reminisce about your childhood days.

2. Spend the day together

If you are fortunate enough to be able to spend the day with your brothers and sisters, make sure you do! Whether you simply have a DVD day or go out for lunch and a few drinks, make the most of the time you’re spending together.

3. A card and a present

You don’t need to spend a fortune, just give your sibling a small gift and a card. The gift can be something they are into or an inside joke –or something they liked as a child. Even just giving a card can really show your siblings how much they mean to you.

4. Make something

Why not go that extra mile and hand-make something for your brother or sister? It could be a picture frame with a lovely photograph of you both as kids or even a collage of pictures of you both grew up.

5. Play Siblings Trivia

No one knows you better than your brother and sister – bad habits and all! So, why not play a game of sibling trivia that’s guaranteed to make you laugh and get you in the spirit of Siblings Day.

6. Arrange a family day

Don’t just spend Siblings Day with your brothers and sisters; use it as an excuse to get the whole family together. Go out, have a picnic or cook dinner. Just spend some quality time together.

7. Go to a theme park

There is nothing better than that spike of adrenaline you get from the largest rollercoaster at Thorpe Park so why not get everyone involved and have a big day out! Eat plenty of candyflosses and scare yourself silly.

8. Spa day

If you and your siblings just love a bit of pampering, why not book yourselves into your local spa resort. Treat yourselves and have a catch up with a glass of champers – pure bliss.

9. Have a party

April 10 is a Friday so it’s the perfect time of the week to arrange a party. Invite your friends and family and get the drinks in and some nibbles out. You could even play a few embarrassing family movies to get everyone into the swing of things.

10. Remember them

If your sibling is unfortunately no longer with you, spend the day remembering them and everything they loved to do. Ensure their spirit is still living on within you by talking to friends and children about them.

These quotes may provide some inspiration if you want to find a poetic way to remember your nearest and dearest.

Brothers and sisters are as close as hands and feet” – Vietnamese proverb
